Project S.M.I.L.E.
The Project S. M. I. L. E. (sensory motor integrated learning environment), program consists of students with special needs ranging in ages from three to 22 years. This program consists of three classrooms:
This program is a multi-sensory environment, which services students with severe developmental, cognitive and physical disabilities. Many of who also require close medical supervision due to seizures, respiratory issues GI tubes, etc.
Individual education plans are developed for each student. Students are addressing the curriculum through entry/access skills, which also addresses daily living skills, sensory integration techniques, oral motor skills, communication skills including argumentative programs and assistive technology, fine/gross motor activities, pre-readiness socialization skills in behavior management. The skills are evaluated through classroom observations data collection, alternate assessment portfolios and developmental assessments.
Most children in these programs receive physical, occupational and speech therapy. Music therapy and adapted physical education are also provided through a weekly/group session. Opportunities for both inclusion and reverse inclusion are provided.
